Scope & Functions of GC Committee

Scope

The Global Citizenship Committee helps to develop and support experiences and activities, including but not limited to, study abroad, grants, professional development, annual themes, etc., that promote the ideas and values of global citizenship across the campus community. The Committee also seeks to affirm all current and future integrations of global citizenship throughout the curriculum.

Functions

The Global Citizenship Committee:

  • Actively seeks guidance and assistance from SMC students and staff in developing and promoting programs and activities that foster global citizenship;
  • Solicits and reviews applications for Global Citizenship Global Grants and Global Citizenship professional development opportunities;
  • Recommends Global Citizenship Study Abroad programs and faculty to Academic Affairs and International Education, and advises on the future development of Study Abroad at SMC;
  • Selects the Global Citizenship theme by procedures deemed appropriate by the Committee - the theme is used in the beginning with the fall semester and continues for two years;
  • Plans and realizes academic opportunities for the campus community to engage with tenets of global citizenship, such as the Teach-In in the fall and the Global Citizenship Symposium in the spring;
  • Recognizes students for their outstanding work as it relates to global citizenship;
  • Develops and maintains an online presence for SMC Global Citizenship;
  • Helps develop and support experiences and activities that promote and investigate ideas and values of global citizenship;
  • Supports and guides the institutionalization of global citizenship throughout the curriculum, such as the GC graduation requirement and Global Studies programs.
