Social Media Guide

Social Media Posting and Sharing Policies

Santa Monica College's social media channels are non-partisan venues for institutional communications only. They are used for official announcements and notifications, to announce SMC-sponsored events, and to feature approved stories of our community. They are not public forums. Below are official policies on what to expect when you make a request.

Posting and Sharing Policies

The SMC social media channels are used to market Santa Monica College and its programs, present special-interest stories associated with the college, and offer an insider's perspective on the college's community, classes, programs, events, and other activities.

Requests to Post or Share Events

The SMC social media channels will only share college-sponsored events. Requests to share events on the SMC social media channels should be sent to websocialmedia@smc.edu or be submitted to the online SMC calendar:

The SMC Calendar

All events on the SMC calendar are automatically considered for distribution on the SMC social media channels.

Only events that take place at Santa Monica College — or are sponsored by Santa Monica College — are considered for the SMC calendar.

Submit a calendar event.

Collaboration

A collaboration post can appear on 2-4 accounts at the same time. All accounts are listed as co-authors. The post shows up on each feed and reaches audiences from each account. Engagement — "likes," comments, and shares — is shared across all accounts. Only the account that created the post and invites others to collaborate can edit or delete the post.

From time to time — usually due to special circumstances — Santa Monica College will accept requests for collaboration on its social media channels. A request for collaboration — which must come from an SMC department, an SMC email address, or a firm hired by SMC — should be sent to websocialmedia@smc.edu. All collaborations must meet the criteria listed on this page.

Please note: Requests for collaborations not initiated by SMC are rarely accepted. Because we get a lot of cold-call requests from anonymous accounts, we require email confirmation from the source before we consider them.

Student Clubs

We will only share club events and activities if:

  1. The club is registered with the Inter-Club Council (ICC) and
  2. The events are open to the entire SMC Community.

Events and meetings for club members only do not qualify.

We can’t help you start a club, and we can't directly recruit members for a club, but you can. To find out how, please consult the Inter-Club Council (ICC).

Cultural Recognition

Cultural recognition — like “heritage months” or holidays — will only be added to the SMC social media channels if they meet one or both of the following criteria:

  1. They are mentioned by the SMC Superintendent/President or Senior Staff in a school announcement or bulletin, or
  2. The cultural or represented group has scheduled one or more SMC-sponsored events during the designated month. Events must be open to the entire SMC Community. Submit events to the online SMC calendar

Press Releases

All requests to post or share press releases are subject to the approval of the SMC Director of Public Information.
