The 2019 SMC Classified & Faculty Summer Institute
We had 34 classified and faculty participants from 16 different departments over the
8 days of the new CFSI! In past years, the summer institute was a faculty-only event;
this year, we were able to open it up to classified staff, who play such a crucial
role in how SMC functions, and, we believe, impact the students just as much.
Thank you to everyone that participated!

What is the Classified & Faculty Summer Institute?
CFSI is a place for classified educators and faculty to connect, collaborate, and create.
It is a series of workshops and speakers over the course of two weeks, designed to enrich our abilities as teachers and classified staff in higher education, and as a part of the Santa Monica College community.
Attendees will learn about ways to revitalize their roles at the College, increase student retention and persistence, and keep students engaged and supported. During the institute, experts and practitioners in the field of education and equity share research-based strategies that increase student success.
The Faculty Summer Institute takes place over 8 days, usually in the first two weeks of August.
The 2018 institute focused on the topics of:
- Technology
- Culturally Responsive Pedagogy
- Excellence in Teaching
- Curriculum Design/Redesign
- Metacognition
