New Employee Onboarding

Understanding Employee Onboarding

"Onboarding" refers to the processes whereby new hires are integrated into Santa Monica College. This process begins when the employee accepts their offer of employment and continues through the initial 6 to 12 months of employment with the District.

Santa Monica College considers this process to be the responsibility of every District employee as it includes a range of actions, activities, and experiences that allow our new employees to learn about the college and its structure, culture, vision, mission and values. The successful Onboarding process includes a shared responsibility between the immediate supervisor, departmental colleagues, Office of Human Resources, and Classified Professional Development Committee.

The key components that are integral to the success of our Onboarding process include:

  • Preboarding
  • Day 1 and Week 1
  • New Hire Onboarding and Orientation
  • One-to-One Development Sessions, 30-60-90 Days
  • Probationary Period and Evaluations

Having recently revamped our Onboarding process, we are proud to offer a robust Managers' Toolkit to help ensure successful outcomes every step of the way.

Start by taking a look at our Toolkit which contains the Onboarding and Orientation Roadmap and explore all the stages of the Onboarding life cycle. Additional helpful tools include a Preboarding Video, a 60-minute interactive Onboarding webinar, a fillable Departmental New Hire Guidebook, the Manger's Guide to One-to-One Development Sessions, an Onboarding Checklist and a New Assignment Training Plan.
