Starting Fall 2025, Santa Monica College and all California community colleges will begin implementing Common Course Numbering (also known as CCN or AB 1111). The new system will use a four-letter abbreviation for the “Subject” (e.g., COMM for Communciation Studies), a “C” for the Common Course Number as the Course Type Identifier, and a standardized four (4)-digit course identification as the Course Number.
In Fall 2025, you’ll notice this change in six courses, with additional courses transitioning each semester until the initiative is complete. Be sure to check the course schedule and catalog carefully, and encourage students to reach out to a counselor if they have questions! Here are the courses with new Common Course Numbering designation as of Fall 2025:

The following course prefixes, course numbers, course names, descriptions, and additional COR details are going into effect Fall 2025:
Phase II (A): Effective Fall 2026

- ARTH C1100 Survey of Art from Prehistory to the Medieval Era
- ARTH C1200 Survey of Art from the Renaissance to Contemporary
- ECON C2001 Principles of Microeconomics
- ECON C2002 Principles of Macroeconomics
- ENGL C1002 Introduction to Literature
- ENGL C1003 Critical Thinking and Writing through Literature
- HIST C1001 United States History to 1877
- HIST C1002 United States History since 1865

Phase II (B), Phase III, and more:
- The Phase II (B) templates are estimated to be released in May 2025, with a Fall 2027 implemenation date.
