Project Description

Construct a new addition to the current Science Building that would consolidate Mathematics and Sciences programs.

The project provides programs adequate space for expansion while accommodating the projected program and enrollment growth. The Math Department is operated within a temporary facility, which did not provide the infrastructure to support the modern technology necessary for a successful educational delivery. Science programs were dispersed to four different locations on campus, preventing effective communication and sharing of resources among faculty, students, and staff. Additionally, as indicated by low capacity/load ratios, deficiencies in lab space were not allowing the programs with heavy laboratory components, such as science, to provide adequate instructional space today or expand program offerings to meet enrollment growth in the future. Consolidating Mathematics and Science programs into the Science Building encourages inter-disciplinary interaction and achieve goals outlined in the District’s Master Plan.

Malibu Campus

Project Description

In the 1970s and early 1980s, Santa Monica College offered about 70 general education classes and several non-credit classes in Malibu throughout a semester. The program was limited to a few classes offered in school district buildings.

The Malibu facility is a classroom facility to provide general education classes, science, art, and Emeritus College classes. There is also an interpretive center to highlight natural environment and history of Malibu and a Sheriff’s sub-station. The District worked cooperatively with the City of Malibu and the County of Los Angeles in planning a site at the Malibu Civic Center.

Early Childhood Lab School

Project Description
SMC had no dedicated childcare facility and offered lab instruction through various local childcare providers. The District lacked a teaching laboratory facility in Early Childhood Education available at many other community colleges.

This project provided a childcare center for the community plus college instructional facilities. The City of Santa Monica partnered in this project, providing the site at the Civic Center and a portion of the building funds.

Student Service Center

Student Services Center

Project Description
The Student Services Building project consolidated most student services and some administrative functions to a single location at the front gateway of the main campus. The project also provides a new campus entry, including a pedestrian walkway, a passenger drop-off area, and a driveway to a new underground parking garage. The 112,000 square foot building is three stories, with work areas for approximately 300 people, along with an assessment center, two classrooms, a 300--seat auditorium for orientation and other uses, and underground parking for 500 cars. The building was constructed to meet the LEED gold standard and includes rooftop photovoltaic panels.

Center for Media and Design

Project Description
This project includes the construction of a new 440-space Parking Structure. Also includes major renovation of the existing 50,000 SF AET building, a new 30,000 SF addition to the existing AET building, a new 33,000 SF building for the KCRW radio station, a new central courtyard, and new landscaping.

Core Performance Center

Project Description

The project consists of the demolition of the existing 1958 Locker Room building and replacing it with a new three-story 66,000 SF complex. The new building consists of athletic facilities, fitness center with climbing wall, fitness studios and dance studios.

Since this building is located in the center of campus, it is an ideal location for the central cooling plant which is an energy efficiency project designed to generate chilled water for efficiently for air cooling in buildings throughout the main campus.

Performing Art Campus - East Wing

Performing Art Center - East Wing

Project Description
Replacement of the seismically deficient East Wing of the Madison Building with a new facility for the Music Department including a Music Hall for rehearsals, performances and special events; a piano teaching lab; and a classroom for voice and choir instruction. Project includes new plaza and entry to the Edye Second Space.

Information Technology Relocation

IT Building

Project Description
The Information Technology department located in Drescher Hall supports the use of information systems on campus. The current server room can no longer support the power and air conditioning needs of the increasingly more powerful servers that are in use today. The plan is to move the department to a new building adjacent to the College's Media Center, which is located on the south end of the Library. Much of the campus technology infrastructure is already located in the Media Center, and the departments work cooperatively on many projects. The project will consist of a new 14,000 SF building and 11,000 SF remodeling of the existing Media Center. The space vacated in Drescher Hall will be converted to academic use as part of a future project.
