We look forward to seeing you at our Professional Development Day on Thursday, March 20, 2025!

Schedule:

8 - 3:45 p.m.

From 8 - 8:25 a.m., coffee and tea will be served in the SMC Main Campus Pavilion.

Lunch is from 12:15 - 1:15 p.m. in the cafeteria and will be from our caterer, Corsair Cafe. Please be sure to RSVP for lunch hereby March 6 at the latest. Remaining meals will be available on a first- come, first- served basis.

The theme for Spring Professional Development Day is Strengthening Student Success: Centering Relationships.

The theme Strengthening Student Success: Centering Relationships is designed to create a space for reflection and growth as we explore meaningful ways to enhance our connections within the college community. Our keynote speaker, Ruben Canedo, will facilitate discussions and activities designed to foster mutual understanding, empathy, and trust among colleagues, contributing to a more supportive and inclusive work environment.

In addition to his keynote, he will facilitate a smaller workshop where participants can build out their ideas learned from his facilitation and apply the key concepts in their roles, teams, and the larger SMC community.

Although there will be a small amount of HyFlex/Zoom options in the afternoon, we want to encourage everyone to come to campus! We can all build better connections when we share common space and spend time together. Please note, though certain workshops may be designed with a specific employee group in mind, in the spirit of professional development, every session is open to all employees at SMC.

Lunch will be from 12:15 p.m. - 1:15 p.m. To make sure we have enough food for everyone attending, we are requiring an RSVP for lunch. Thank you for understanding.

Please RSVP for your free lunch ticket by March 6, so that we can give final numbers to our caterer, Corsair Cafe.

Would you like to get involved on PD Day? We would love your help with setup, breakdown, and/or lunch. We can’t do it without the help of our village! Let us know if you would like to help!

Our Keynote speaker, Ruben Canedo, joined SMC on PD Day in 2022, to highlight the importance of supporting students' basic needs. He is returning to SMC to lead discussions on dignity, corrections, healing, and reciprocity. Ruben will integrate healing concepts from texts such as Adrienne Maree Brown’s “Loving Corrections” and Prentis Hemphill’s book “What it takes to heal” to help the SMC community learn how to cultivate a more collaborative culture, where every individual feels valued and empowered.
