This internship program will use the fundamentals of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility (DEIA) to place underrepresented and nontraditional candidates in fields where they can gain opportunities for career exploration in community college teaching, as well as build genuine working relationships with faculty and staff.
This is a one academic year teaching internship program promoting quality instruction and DEIA in community college teaching.
The internship program is open to all external individuals interested in teaching who may not have considered teaching at the community college-level.
The internship program will give SMC the opportunity to place underrepresented and nontraditional individuals in fields where they will gain opportunities for teaching, career exploration and build genuine working relationships with faculty and staff.
The program's goals
- To improve the diversity pool of community college faculty at SMC and for our interns to become role models by reflecting DEIA principles with the SMC community.
- To create a pool of diverse community college faculty who are sensitive to the needs of the students and community it serves who will then be prepared and available for future recruitment.
To assist and support the faculty internship program SMC faculty will be offered the opportunity to apply for the following positions:

SMC is offering internships in the following disciplines:
- Computer Science and Information Systems (CSIS)
- Design Technology
- Health Sciences
- History/Ethnic Studies
- Life Sciences
- Mathematics
- Physical Sciences
20 interns will be selected from an applicant pool.
Prospective faculty intern leads must be full-time, tenured, or tenured track (3rd or 4th year) faculty at SMC by the start of the semester during which they will serve as a faculty intern lead.
Faculty must have received satisfactory evaluations.
Faculty must be teaching an on-ground class in the Spring semester.
Selection will be based on these factors:
- Connections to disciplines offered in the faculty internship program.
- Demonstrated commitment to DEIA.
- Faculty intern leads must have demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty, and staff.
- Faculty intern leads must be able to demonstrate how these factors relate to the need for equity minded practices within an educational environment.
- Positive reputation among students, colleagues, and supervisors.
- Faculty intern leads will be positive role models for their interns. Thus, faculty with outstanding teaching reputations – among students, colleagues, and supervisors – will be given priority in the selection process.
- You need to be open to a collaborative learning process: offering ongoing support to your interns and being receptive to feedback from your interns.
- You must be committed to participating in ongoing professional development.
- It would be helpful if you are engaged in professional work outside of the classroom (i.e., through service on department-, campus-, and/or district-wide committees; professional leadership experiences; etc.).
The internship program occurs in the Spring semester.
The position of faculty intern lead covers 2 semesters, Fall and Spring. The active semester when interns are in your class is Spring.
The interns apply and are selected in the Fall semester.
Planning, matching, training, and workshops for interns will occur during the Fall, Winter and Spring semesters.
Though this schedule may vary slightly, typically, the job announcement posts at the end of the Spring Semester and successful applicants are notified by early August.

Due to the commitment required for both positions you will not be able to be both the chief faculty intern lead and faculty intern lead.
- Meet with your intern for at least 30 minutes per week during Fall, Winter is optional, and Spring using modes agreed upon by both parties: in person, phone, Zoom, etc.
- Faculty intern leads and interns alike must establish a clear understanding of how they will approach the Spring semester.
- Help interns plan and process their teaching experiences.
- With flexibility after a few weeks (such as 3 weeks), the faculty intern lead and Intern upon mutual agreement will agree on what the intern may teach.
- Faculty intern leads will provide feedback in response to all intern teaching. As the semester progresses, the intern will be allowed an increasing amount of supervised time teaching in front of the class. When prepared and capable, the intern should teach at least one class session in its entirety.
- Help the intern prepare to teach part of the class, for example:
- Option 1: have the intern teach two 60-minute lessons for their students. Debrief
about the lessons with the intern.
And/or - Option 2: allocate the inter portion/section/topic of the 3-unit/5-unit class on consecutive
weeks throughout the semester. Debrief about the lessons with the intern.
And - When prepared and capable, interns should teach at least one class session in its entirety. Debrief about the lessons with the intern. And taking into account disciplines that included lecture and clinical component.
- Have the intern observe the clinical component.
- Option 1: have the intern teach two 60-minute lessons for their students. Debrief
about the lessons with the intern.
- The intern should also get a chance to observe your course Canvas shell and note organizational methods, communication processes, student engagement strategies, and assessment techniques.
- Offer insight into developing inclusive classroom environments in which all participants’ ideas, cultures, and identities are valued and respected.
- Introduce the intern to student assessment techniques, including grading methods.
- Strategize classroom engagement and management techniques with the intern, including best practices for addressing student conduct issues (i.e., student incident reporting, de-escalation techniques, academic honesty promotion, etc.).
- You are still the instructor of record and as a faculty intern lead you must always be present in the classroom.
- Share observations about their experiences with teaching in distinct modalities: in-person, asynchronous, hybrid, online synchronous, etc.
- Beyond class time, you should meet with your intern to plan future class activities and participation as well as to offer feedback to the intern.
- Through regular and open dialogue with your intern, they will also get an understanding on how to prioritize professional responsibilities, avoid burnout, manage time and work/life commitments, and locate opportunities for professional growth.
- Have interns meet the department chair, other faculty members, attend meetings to better understand campus life, by doing so they will develop a sense of belonging to the community college faculty culture.
- Facilitate opportunities for your intern to engage with and connect to the College communities.
- Engage the intern in discussions about inclusion and equity in relation to community college students, faculty, staff, and administrators.
- Heighten a sense of belonging to the community college faculty culture through regular and open dialogue with the intern.
- Discuss prospects for career development with the intern: review application and interview strategies.
- Provide interns with honest feedback about and insights into careers in community college teaching.
- You will participate in a brief orientation. There is also a small amount of time required to complete the mandatory forms to track the intern’s progress and attendance.
- Participate in the graduation at the end of the Spring semester.
- As you and your intern agree, there may be flexibility for interns to attend other classes.
- You will demonstrate your knowledge and insight into developing inclusive classroom environments in which all participants’ ideas, cultures, and identities are valued and respected. You will prepare your intern to participate in supervised interactions with students: conferencing in class or student hours, leading discussions, facilitating review sessions, etc. Learn about student assessment options and grading practices. Discover classroom management techniques and understand the student incident reporting process.
- Model best practices for developing and delivering curriculum, engaging students, establishing inclusive environments, and ensuring equitable outcomes.
In Fall you will meet with your intern one-on-one to discuss the Spring semester internship. Faculty intern leads and interns alike must have a clear understanding of how they will approach the Spring semester.
As a guide meet with the intern for at least 30 minutes per week during Fall and or Winter if you are available using modes agreed upon by both parties: in person, phone, Zoom, etc.
Interns will work approximately three hours per week with you during the Spring semester in one of your 3-unit/5-unit classes.
You must always be present in the classroom at all times.
Currently, as 20 interns will be selected, there will likely be more faculty intern lead applicants than interns. Applying to be a faculty intern lead does not automatically guarantee that faculty will be assigned an intern.
Once the intern applications are received and interns selected you will be assigned one intern related to your discipline.
Weekday and evening opportunities are available Monday through Friday (no weekend assignments are available)
Faculty intern lead and class matching is at the sole discretion of SMC and is implemented by Human Resources.
A faculty intern lead will receive a stipend of $1,600 to support, guide, and promote the professional growth of their intern. There will be two payments, one at the end of March and one at the end of June.
