This internship program will use the fundamentals of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility (DEIA) to place underrepresented and nontraditional candidates in fields where they can gain opportunities for career exploration in community college teaching, as well as build genuine working relationships with faculty and staff.
This is a one academic year teaching internship program promoting quality instruction and DEIA in community college teaching.
The internship program is open to all external individuals interested in teaching who may not have considered teaching at the community college-level.
The internship program will give SMC the opportunity to place underrepresented and nontraditional individuals in fields where they will gain opportunities for teaching, career exploration and build genuine working relationships with faculty and staff.
The program's goals
- To improve the diversity pool of community college faculty at SMC and for our interns to become role models by reflecting DEIA principles with the SMC community.
- To create a pool of diverse community college faculty who are sensitive to the needs of the students and community it serves who will then be prepared and available for future recruitment.
To assist and support the faculty internship program SMC faculty will be offered the opportunity to apply for the following positions:
- Chief faculty Intern Lead
- Faculty Intern Lead
The chef faculty intern lead must be full-time, tenured faculty at a SMC.
The minimum qualification is a Masters in any discipline or the equivalent. Preferred qualification is a Master of Education.
Faculty must have received satisfactory evaluations.
One chief faculty intern lead will be selected to coordinate the internship program.
The chief faculty intern lead will consult with the Vice President of Human Resources or designee. They will meet regularly and work collaboratively with Human Resources and be a member of the EEO Grant development team specific to the internship program.
- Experience in and commitment to DEIA teaching practices.
- Evidence that you are a positive role model with an outstanding teaching reputation among students, colleagues, and supervisors.
- A sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty, and staff and must be able to demonstrate how these factors relate to the need for equity minded practices within an educational environment.
- An ability to communicate openly and effectively and in a timely manner with all stakeholders.
- Skills in collaborating with all stakeholders including faculty and administrators on long-term projects and programs.
- Positive reputation among students, colleagues, and supervisors.
- Engaged in professional work outside of the classroom (i.e., through service on department-, campus-, and/or district-wide committees; professional leadership experiences; etc.).
Approx 12-month term and/or duration of the EEO Grant.
Once selected, the chief faculty intern lead may have the option to reapply for additional terms.
Though this schedule may vary slightly, typically, the job announcement posts during the Summer around July and successful applicants notified by early August.

You will not be able to be both the chief faculty intern lead and faculty intern lead.

- Design Technology
- Health Sciences
- History/Ethnic Studies
- Life Sciences
- Mathematics
- Physical Sciences
- Promote the internship program throughout the District and in the community.
- Match and place the interns with faculty intern leads.
- Moderate, maintain, and update the internship program’s Canvas shell, including composing and sending announcements to interns, engaging in discussion boards, providing relevant resources, and fostering communication between interns and faculty intern leads.
- Develop and implement the internship program’s activities, such as:
- With support from the Professional Development Coordinator create and promote a calendar of professional development opportunities for interns.
- Recruit campus and community experts to perform complementary trainings for interns (i.e., Department Chairs, union, Student Services (such as EOPS, Financial Aid, DSPS, CPT, HR, Title IX Coordinator, Student Judicial Affairs, online instruction experts, committee representatives, etc.).
- The Orientation for interns and faculty intern leads with assistance from the Professional Development Coordinator
- The Winter training program of interns with assistance from the Professional Development Coordinator
- Follow-up sessions with assistance from the Professional Development Coordinator
- Participate in the graduation.
- Review all evaluations done by the faculty intern leads and interns.
- Engage in other duties as assigned and necessary to implement a successful faculty internship program.
- Prepare a report that will be submitted to the Board of Trustees annually.
- Fostering communication and collaboration between interns and faculty intern leads.
- Provide interns with honest feedback about and insights into careers in community college teaching.
- Communicate with faculty intern leads for regular check-ins and is available to address questions and concerns relating to intern/faculty intern lead pairings.
20 interns and faculty intern leads will be selected from an applicant pool.
To maximize faculty participation each faculty intern lead will be assigned only one intern.
We acknowledge the growing importance of all forms of learning, but our interns want and need experience teaching in front of a classroom of students. Classroom teaching experience is essential in the role of supporting both the interns and faculty intern leads during the internship program.
As interns will be assigned to traditional on ground courses and the chef faculty intern lead must be available to go to these classes if needed and attend and organize the on ground events.
The stipend will be $3,500 per semester, Summer, Fall, Winter, and Spring, total of $14,000.
There will be four payments, one at the end of each semester starting in Summer, then following at the end of the Fall, Winter, and Spring semesters.
